Dixie GU-11A Win St Thomas Soccerfest

The Dixie girls had a great run at the annual Soccerfest tournament in St Thomas. In the round robin portion Dixie played tight defence and finished well as they rolled over Pickering 5-0, Chatham 5-0 and Dorchester 5-0.
The semi final pitted Dixie against Hamilton Sparta from the SRSL. A tight game at both ends ensued as neither team gave many chances at their net. Finally Dixie broke through and netted two goals en route to a 2-0 final and a trip to the championship game.
Mooredale lighting was the opponent for the final game as they bested Sault St Marie in the other semi final game. Dixie was not to be denied though as they struck early and built a 3-0 lead heading into the second half. Mooredale scored and moved to within two goals but Dixie quickly struck back from the kick off to make the final 4-1.
Congratulations to the players as they conceded only one goal in the tournament and played some great possession soccer.
Dixie U8 Girls Strike Gold in League Cup Play!

On Sunday August 22, 2010 the Dixie U8 Girls squad squared off against their season-long nemesis, the Mississauga Falcons, to vie for the South Region Soccer League Cup. Although the win did not come easy, Dixie was able to hand the Falcons their first loss of the year.
According to coach Noel, “It was a total team effort that allowed us to play tough all game long. Every player had a role and we stuck to our game plan. I had no doubt in my mind that we could win if we played to our potential.”
In the first half Dixie constantly hemmed the Falcons in their own end. This forced a number of turnovers that proved to be the key to the first Dixie goal. The second half was much the same. In the 40th minute Dixie was able to counter attack due to a strong defensive front to bump the score to 2 – 0. Throughout the game Mississauga had several quality scoring opportunities but did not have an answer for the Dixie keeper. With under a minute remaining in the game Mississauga was able to squeak one by but it made little difference. Dixie tamed the Falcons by a score of 2 - 1. Goal scorers for Dixie were Jordyn and Kelly. Stellar net minding was provided by Emily.
Members of the Dixie U8 Girls’ Soccer Team are: Kaitlynn, Cara, Olivia, Kelly, Kalli, Emily, Jordyn, Celia, Jessica, Stephania, Daryn, Kate, Alicia, Coaches Noel and Terry and managers Teresa and Fatima.
Congratulations Girls!!!

Well Done Dixie Athletic Boys 97's !

We are back from our UK Trip, what a great experience!
The boys completed 6 days of MUSS training in 3 days which was impressive to the MUSS Coaches.
We played our 1st friendly against Fletcher Moss Rangers with Dixie winning. Our second friendly was against Sale United. Again Dixie came out on top. We were heading into our third friendly versing Denstone’s South African team, surely we would be tested but again we won and with approx. 22 goals for and zero against after our 3 friendly’s, we were ready to move on to the tournament in Blackpool.
First game was against Beggsboro AFC – Dixie 5 – Beggsboro 0
Second game on Saturday was against St. Joseph ’s, we were told we wouldn’t beat them but we did 9-0. We had already earned respect from the other teams they sang
“ We love Dixie ” as we passed by.
Sunday was our third tournament game playing Invergordon BC 5-0 for us.
Onto the quarter finals playing Blackpool themselves again Dixie won 5-0
Semi’s would be tough we were playing the defending champs Ayr Boswell, game got a little tense but in the end Dixie won 1-0
The final game played on Monday. We were playing the runner ups from last year. Scotland ’s Rangers. Dixie scored first but in the last few minutes Rangers tied it up on a free kick. This was the first goal scored on us since we had left Canada . Down to penalties, Rangers came out on top by 1 goal. Dixie is proud to bring home silver and put Dixie on the map!
We would like to thanks our MUSS Coaches/trainers James, Mark and Nipper. Thanks Nipper for cheering us on in our final game as well. Also thanks to our tour guide and driver Brian and Mark and also to our gracious hosts while in Blackpool Richard and Lynne….we miss the home cooking already!

Man U welcomes Dixie Club
Happy bunch. Dixie Athletics '97's U-13 squad will be going to Manchester, England for the United Soccer Schools and play three friendly matches from March 28th to April 6th. They'll also play in the Blackpool Cup Tournament. They are; (front l-r) Sheldon Rodgers, Sachin Maharaj, Alec Capstick, Matthew Watson, Justin Paulo, Nicholos Machado, Middle Row: Manager Cathy Watson, Coach Tom Quashie, Ajay Bhullar, Donte Lloyd, David Ellington, Quentin Williams, Vishal Kinhq, Koosha Nazemi, Ryan Cseplo, Alec Meneses and Asst. Manager Cindy Capstick. Rear; Jonathon Amoo, Andre Lewin, Orrett Powell, Justin White and Assistant Coach David Ellington. Photo by Peter McCusker
For passionate soccer players, there can be no greater thrill than kicking a ball around at venerable Old Trafford, home of Manchester United of the English Premier League – even if only for practice.
Throw in an opportunity to travel to Blackpool, another legendary soccer hotbed, to compete in one of the world’s largest youth tournaments and, well, it’s a trip of a lifetime for the Dixie Athletic under-13 A boys’ rep team.
The 17 boys, accompanied by a contingent of parents, leaves March 28 and returns April 6.
“I’m counting down the days. It’s still a week before we leave, and I’ve got almost everything already packed,” said goalkeeper Alec Capstick.
What excites the 12-year-old and most of his teammates is that Man U happens to be their favourite EPL club.
“Edwin Van der Sar (the Red Devils’ star goalie)...I really like him,” said Alec, when asked whom he’d most like to meet. “It would be awesome to see where he plays and maybe get to meet him.”
Quentin Williams counts himself fortunate to be going along as a “guest player.”
“I used to play for (Dixie coach Tom Quashie), so when he wanted an extra player he asked me whether I wanted to go,” said Quentin, who in the 2008/09 indoor season scored 17 goals for his Brampton team.
Co-captain Matthew Watson is looking forward to the three days at the Man U soccer clinic.
“It would be interesting to see how they train us,” said the 13-year-old defender. “I’m told their drills and tactics are a little different from ours.”
Matthew is also hoping to catch a glimpse of his favourite Man U player, only his is English national Wayne Rooney, who, with 30 goals under his belt already, is lighting up the Premiership and is on pace to shatter former teammate and 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo’s 42-goal total.
“I watch him on TV all the time, so it would be great to see him live,” said Matthew, of Rooney.
But, as one of the team’s three co-captains, Matthew’s mind is also on business. And job number one is to bring home a medal from the Blackpool Cup, one of the top youth tourneys in the world, with some 400 top clubs vying for bragging rights. Besides the U.K., squads hail from France, Belgium and host of this year’s World Cup, South Africa. Dixie is the only Canadian team in the tournament, now in its 24th year.
“We’re hoping to win, but we don’t know how strong the other teams will be,” said Matthew, who has played all his six years of soccer under Quashie.
The veteran coach, however, isn’t fazed in the slightest.
“We have lots of skill with the ball. If we get an early lead, the European teams tend to go on the offensive and open up the game. I think we can capitalize on that,” said Quashie, who led his squad to the South Region Soccer League Elite Division title last year.
If nothing else, Dixie will be game-hardened. In addition to participating in several indoor tournaments this winter, it played in an indoor league at Hershey SportZone. Although they’re in contention for the league title, the Dixie players and coaches are passing up the league playoffs to go on the dream trip.
In Blackpool, Dixie will be grouped with a dozen other teams from Ireland, Scotland, England, France and Belgium, among them legendary clubs such as Celtic, Blackpool and Invergordon.
Jonathon Amoo, 12, who plays both striker and midfield positions, says that win or lose, the trip will be a chance “to experience new things and play soccer in a different way.
“It’s also a chance for us to showcase our skills to scouts,” continued the Lisgar Middle School student.
Since they were accepted into the tournament (on their second try), club members have ran themselves ragged organizing events to raise funds for the 10-day trip. To come up with the $3,000 per player, they organized a bottle drive and brought out the chips for a poker night.
It's paid off; come March 28, the team will gather at the Hershey Centre and travel to the airport in a convoy of limousines.
“We wanted them to feel special, so we came up with this idea to have them go in style,” said Quentin’s mom, Cheryl.
The rest of the roster comprises Justin White, Nicholas Machado, Sheldon Rodgers, Ajay Bhullar, Ryan Cseplo, David Ellington, Andre Lewin, Vishal Kinha, Justin Paulo, Donte Lloyd, Orrett Powell, Alec Meneses and Koosha Nazemi. Patrolling the sidelines with Quashie is David Ellington Sr.

Diamond sparkles for Canada

Mississauga’s Diamond Simpson was in the line-up as Canada’s under-17 women’s soccer team defeated Mexico 1-0 Saturday at the CONCACAF U-17 championship in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
The victory punched Canada's ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago in September.
Kinley McNicoll scored the lone goal of the match in the eighth minute. The junior Canucks played the final 33 minutes a man short, but defended strongly and held on for the win.
“We are ecstatic,” said national coach Bryan Rosenfeld. “To come out as CONCACAF champions, winning a gold medal through all the adversity ... we definitely took the hard road. It showed a lot of character from our Canadian girls.”
In the semi-finals, Canada defeated the United States 5-3 on penalty kicks following a scoreless tie in regulation time.
Simpson, 16, played a key role in Canada’s march to the championship. The midfielder from the Dixie Soccer Club scored the winning goal in the team’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Panama.

Dixie GU-11 Take March Break OSA Crown
The Dixie Athletics played in the OSA Centre March Break tournament and came away with a well-deserved championship. After Beating Clarkson twice and splitting wins with the Toronto Eagles Dixie finished first in their group and advanced to the semi finals.
The game was never in doubt as Dixie dominated play and held Lake Simcoe scoreless while potting two of their won. Final score 2-0 and on to the finals where they again met the Toronto Eagles who dispatched Etobicoke in the other semi final.
It was a low scoring affair but Dixie scored early and then held possession as they controlled play and sent several dangerous balls at the Toronto keeper. A late break by the Eagles was turned away by the Dixie keeper and the Athletics ran out the clock with some superb passing.
Congratulations to the Athletics for their win and in particular for allowing only one goal the entire tournament, encompassing 6 games.
